From Tom:
I was so excited to be working with the Whites at first that I didn’t really give a lot of thought to the fact that, uh, we needed to actually come up with a song together. We explored various ideas, and then I sent them a bit with some basic bass and drum and a lead synth that sounded like a cat. Ironically, I hadn’t intended for the feline nature of it, but cats were heavy on my mind because I had just lost my beloved Syd a few days prior - who was going feral. And April, bless her heart, wrote these splendid lyrics about our feral friends. Because she was hearing the cat in my track. So yes–this song is about cats, and particularly the wild ones. I knew before I ever heard the piano and guitar and vocals that I would love them, and I did.

From April:
It’s not really about cats per se to me; I wrote the lyrics about the fits of the blues or the black dog of depression which sometimes arrive in one’s life for no apparent reason and “stay from time to time,” but with a feline theme, as I did hear the sound of cats in the tracks Tom sent. And, hey, cats and synthesizers – what could possibly go wrong?! Weeks of frantic and misconstrued trans-Atlantic emails later, I feel we got a good meld of my love of structure and melody and Tom’s more avant-garde magic, all enhanced and made real with Pat’s guitar and engineering skills.
